Ken Webb, the creative mind behind the pen name A.L. Masters, was born and raised in Swindon, an industrial town in Wiltshire, England. After completing his secondary education, Ken pursued his academic journey at university and earned a postgraduate Certificate in Education. At the age of 22, he emigrated to Australia, embarking on a life enriched by extensive travel, a thriving teaching career, and a growing family.
Ken began his teaching career in New South Wales public schools before transitioning to independent schools, humorously referred to as “the dark side” by his colleagues. Despite retiring from full-time teaching in 2012, Ken continues to inspire students with his expertise in Modern History and Extension History. His lectures and workshops cater to Year 12 HSC students and educators across Sydney, regional NSW, and the ACT.
Ken Webb’s passion for writing emerged in the late 1980s, primarily focused on History. His scholarly works have guided countless senior students in Australia, New Zealand, and international schools throughout Asia. With topics ranging from the Weimar Republic to the Vietnam War and Ancient Rome to the philosophy of history itself, Ken remains a prolific contributor to the study of Modern History.
However, behind his historian’s pen lay an unfulfilled crime writer. This creative yearning gave rise to A.L. Masters and his compelling lead character, Detective Inspector Winston Leonard Spencer Hargreaves—or “Spence,” as he’s known to everyone from colleagues to criminals in Swindon. For years, Spence was overshadowed by historical titans like Mussolini, Stalin, and Ho Chi Minh, but eventually, the crime writer prevailed.
The “Spence Hargreaves” series launched with four gripping novels set in the early 2010s: Malicious Obsession, Delusions of Grandeur, The Evil of Virtue, and Patient Vengeance. Each book offers a self-contained mystery, though Spence and his investigative team serve as the thread connecting them all. The fifth installment, Julie Trax Down, takes readers back to Spence’s early career as a young detective constable in Swindon CID during the mid-1980s.
Now fully immersed in the world of crime fiction, A.L. Masters continues to weave tales of intrigue and suspense from Sydney, Australia, while remaining deeply connected to his English roots, visiting the UK whenever possible.
ost beloved voices.
