Arielle S. Emmett

Dr. Arielle S. Emmett is an acclaimed writer, visual journalist, and traveling scholar with expertise in East Asia, science writing, and human-interest storytelling. Over the span of her career, Dr. Emmett has contributed to prominent publications, including Smithsonian Air & Space, Mother Jones, Smithsonian.com, The Scientist, OMNI, Ms., Boston Globe, American Journalism Review, Philadelphia Inquirer, Detroit Free Press, Caixin (Beijing), and many others.

As a Fulbright Scholar and Specialist, she has taught and conducted research in Kenya (2018-2019) and Indonesia (2015), and she has also held teaching positions at the International College Beijing, the University of Hong Kong Media Studies Centre, and Strathmore University Law School in Nairobi.

Dr. Emmett’s work has been widely recognized, earning her first-place honors in writing competitions hosted by the American Society of Journalists & Authors (ASJA) and the International Communications Association (ICA). Her academic and journalistic expertise extends to her contributions to the book Technological Leapfrogging and Innovation in Africa (Edward Elgar, 2023).

A fluent speaker of Mandarin and French, Dr. Emmett also explores her creative side as a science fiction author. Her debut novel, The Logoharp, envisions a future shaped by the evolving dynamics between China and America a century from now and is the first installment in her planned dystopian-to-utopian series. The novel recently earned the prestigious Silver Award in Science Fiction from the 2025 Nautilus Book Awards.
